Creative Photo Workshops - Learning by Doing

The combination of Shelton Muller and Glynn Lavender at a photography workshop is contagious fun. But more than that, they run workshops at which the motto is “Learning by Doing”. Together they form a new force in photographic learning called Creative Photo Workshops. Providing more than just a lecture or a shoot in which students follow a photographer around and simply watch photographs being established, Shelton and Glynn provide an experience from which photographers derive a great deal of fun and take home some wonderful images as well. More than that, they ensure that their customers take home the principles that made these images possible.

cpw20100215b.jpg“We are not precious about the whole ‘teaching what we know thing,’ Shelton says. “Far too often, photographers are scared to pass on what they know to others, fearing that they will lose ground if they do. For us, seeing the little lights come on in people’s eyes is a reward in itself.”

Creative Photo Workshops has built a wonderful photographic community that surrounds its activities. The energy that they engender has brought together a group of people whose lives have been altered irreversibly as a result of being at CPW workshops. Many have become part time or full time photographers, while others have simply found a group of people that - as one customer put it - ‘normalises their passion’. Either way, their workshops are often life changing events for their customers in one way or another.

Workshop styles range from the basic “How to Understand Your DLSR” right through to “Creative Wedding Photography” and “Advanced Flash Photography”. They run workshops here and overseas, with their upcoming New Zealand workshop rapidly selling out. Glynn and Shelton will be in the US during the second half of February running workshops in Los Angeles, and will undoubtedly return for the many more that are in the planning process.

Their most recent addition to the CPW repertoire was an evening workshop they lightheartedly referred to as “Emerging Nymph” - a workshop that resulted in images taken by customers that rivaled the work of internationally renowned photographers.  When images from this workshop started finding their way all over workshop, a re-run was immediately put into place to handle the instant level of curiosity and demand. This will run on the evening of Tuesday the 16th of March. A third is being tentatively planned for the March 23rd, depending on demand.
