Article by: Deon Van Den Berg

On the 10th February 2010 Olympus launched their new range of cameras in Sydney. As guests of Olympus we were given a special briefing of the new 2010 range.

Leading the way are two flagship compact models for the year, with the Pen E-PL1 and the Tough 8010. Alongside these two models Olympus also introduced the Pen E-P2,  the Mju Tough 3000 series, Mju 9010, SP-600 UZ & the SP-800 UZ.

olypmus20100218b.jpgThe range of models now come bundled with a new software package called [ib], replacing the Olympus Master software. For those who enjoy showing off recent snaps, weather it be on your PC, TV or through your camera, you will love the [ib] software. It allows the user to organize, create collections, edit and view all images though what appeared very user-friendly software.

A fantastic feature in the [ib] software is the automatic face detection that can recognize up to 16 faces in a single photograph as individual subjects, allowing for 'tagging' of each person. Once a person has been tagged, they stay index in the [ib] system as the software, in future automatically  aligns these tagged people with subsequent uploads of people in new images. This makes light work down the track with arranging photos by person, on top of the standard date options.

olypmus20100218c.jpgImages can also be tagged using an incorporated Google Maps feature, so you can simply look at a map and see who you associated with and where on a map, on any particular date. Although this seems quite gimmicky now, the potential for this to be aligned with social media networks such as Facebook is staggering, as the convergence of technology every day just steps closer and closer. Let's just wait and see where Olympus take this [ib] software with v2.0...

Something that will satisfy our digital camera review Katrina, is the long over due (by all manufacturers) inclusion of internal memory storage of either 1GB or 2GB capacities for all new Olympus compact cameras. This has manly been added for the 'photo surfing' feature. Once you have tagged images in the [ib] software you can then transfer them back to the camera’s internal memory along with all the new meta-data applied to the images on your computer, making it viewable on the LCD screen of the camera. The feature simply makes searching for images in camera fast and easy and turns your compact into a mobile photo album. Furthermore, with the HDMI port you can view all images on HD compatible televisions.

In conclusion Olympus has focused on releasing a smaller range of new models but at the same time ensured that they cater for a wide range of photographers and styles. Keep an eye out on Buy-n-Shoot.com for official reviews on all the above models in the near future.

About Olympus

In Greek mythology, Mt.Olympus is the home of the twelve supreme gods and goddesses. Olympus was named after this mountain to reflect its strong aspiration to create high quality, world famous products.

"Olympus" has been used as a trademark since the time of Takachiho Seisakusho, the predecessor of Olympus Corporation.

In Japanese mythology, it is said that eight million gods and goddesses live in Takamagahara, the peak of Mt.Takachiho. The name "Olympus" was selected as the trademark because Mt.Olympus, like Mt.Takachiho, was the home of gods and goddesses. This trademark is also imbued with the aspiration of Olympus to illuminate the world with its optical devices, just like Takamagahara brought light to the world.

Takachiho Seisakusho was renamed Takachiho Optical Co., Ltd. in 1942 when optical products became the mainstay of the company. In 1947, the name was changed again to Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. in an attempt to enhance its corporate image.

And in 2003, the company made a fresh start as Olympus Corporation, to show its willingness to establish a dynamic corporate brand by unifying the corporate name and the well-known brand.

In recent years, Olympus Corporation has focused on "Opto-Digital Technology" as its core competence, technological strengths that competitors cannot easily imitate, to maximize corporate value and to become one of the top optical instrument manufactures.
