Introducing TruePic III image processor
Olympus Imaging Australia today announced the introduction of the 8-megapixel, 5x optical zoom Mju 840 – a slimline design with a powerful Dual Shakeproof Image Stabiliser and 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD with in-camera panorama. The Mju 840 comes in silver and black and will be available in Australia from March 2008 for AU$399 RRP. The Mju 840 continues the traditional Olympus hallmark ‘Arc & Wedge’ design and coupled with Olympus’ breakthrough lens design technology, offers a stylish camera body with powerful 5x optical zoom that fits comfortably in the hand.
Main Features
• 5x optical zoom lens and 8-megapixel CCD for big, clear photos from a distance
• Dual Shakeproof CCD-shift and high ISO image stabilisation for crystal clear images
• Face Detect & Shadow Adjust Technology for first class in-shot exposure of faces and background
• Bright, high-contrast 2.7-inch HyperCrystal
LCD monitor with a wide viewing angle
A powerhouse of optical design technology, Olympus’ has developed a new Dual Super Aspherical (DSA) lens element, constructed using proprietary Olympus technology. This offers a powerful 5x optical zoom lens to be snugly housed within the Mju 840’s sleek camera body measuring only 24mm thick. Furthermore, the revolutionary lens design has ensured that the Mju 840 produces uncompromising image quality for a camera sleek and slim enough to slide into a pocket. Offering sharp, high-contrast imaging to the periphery of the image field, the lens complements the 8 megapixel CCD image sensor and exclusive Olympus TruePic III image processor ensuring high image quality and vibrant colour.
The Mju 840 boasts a powerful Dual Shakeproof CCD-shift and high ISO image stabilisation system that works together to correct camera shake and subject motion blur, ensuring crisp, sharp image reproduction.
The Mju 840 also features Face Detect & Shadow Adjust Technology to ensure that both foreground and background are exposed perfectly. Unlike face-detection systems that set focus and exposure only for the face, Olympus Face Detect & Shadow Adjust Technology balances the exposure to include the face and the background independently from one another. This results in an image that appears just as it would be seen with the human eye. A large, 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD monitor offers excellent visibility and a wide, 176° viewing angle, making it easy for users to see their subject in clear, natural colour and share images with friends.
Panorama pictures are also now quick and easy to take using the Mju 840’s in-camera panorama function. With the Mju 840 and an Olympus xD card, the function allows for three shots to be captured and stitched together automatically in the camera. Users are also assisted in ensuring their shots are in the required alignment through useful guide markings. Once aligned, the Mju 840 will automatically fire off the shot. Mju 840 automatically stitches panorama images together in the camera. All you need is an Olympus xD card.
5x optical zoom in a sleek, slim (24 mm) body
The light, slimline Mju 840 has a thickness of only 24 mm, yet packs a 5x optical zoom lens that offers the equivalent of 36–180mm 1 zoom performance. This has been achieved through Olympus’ development of revolutionary Dual Super Aspherical (DSA) lens elements, each doing the work of several conventional elements, making it possible to create extremely compact yet powerful zoom lenses. Historically, DSA lens elements have been very thin in the centre making them difficult to manufacture.
Olympus, a leading lens designer and manufacturer, has utilised breakthrough proprietary technology to develop a high-performance DSA lens element that enables the camera to offer 5x optical zoom and outstanding image quality in an exceptionally slim, compact body. At Mju 840’s maximum telephoto setting, the 5x optical zoom lens makes subjects appear approximately 1.7 times larger than they appear with a 3x optical zoom lens2. Shooting from a distance of two metres with a 3x optical zoom lens set to maximum telephoto, the entire upper half of a subject’s body fits in the frame; under the same conditions, the subject’s face fills the frame with the Mju 840’s 5x optical zoom. This makes for highly effective portraits for everyday users.
Dual Shakeproof Image Stabilisation: Sensor-Shift + Digital Image Stabilisation
The Mju 840’s Dual Shakeproof Sensor-Shift Image Stabilisation system uses a dual-axis gyro sensor to accurately detect camera shake, and prevents blur by shifting the CCD sensor to compensate. In addition, high ISO sensitivity Digital Image Stabilisation enables 8 megapixel imaging at sensitivities up to ISO 1600 to help reduce blurring caused by camera shake or subject motion. As a result, users experience a better quality and higher level of success when working in low light or with active subjects. Sharper, clearer images can be obtained even at high telephoto settings.
High-resolution 8 megapixel CCD and TruePic III image processor
The TruePic III image processor, originally developed for use in Olympus cutting edge DSLR range, reduces noise, detects jagged edges to reproduce them smoothly, and reliably reproduces pale colours, including skin tones. It works in conjunction with the camera’s high-resolution lens and 8 megapixel image sensor to achieve truly outstanding image quality. Powered by TruePic III, the Mju 840 delivers high-speed processing for stress-free shooting with natural colour reproduction and rich tonal contrast. With TruePic III the Mju 840:
• Reduces noise, particularly in lower light situations by ensuring clear, high-fidelity reproduction of primary subject elements.
• Smoothes out jagged edges by accurately identifying the edges of image elements, and removing colour artifacts.
• Reproduces true-to-life colours by adjusting luminance and chrominance signals individually, assuring more natural reproduction of pale, subtle colours, especially skin tones.
Bright, 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD monitor with wide viewing angle
The 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD monitor offers increased brightness for easier viewing in bright light. It has a wide, 176° viewing angle that makes it easier to see the monitor when shooting from unusual angles or sharing images with friends, and provides a clearer view of subjects even when taking photos at night or in bright outdoor light. Improved colour fidelity and contrast ensure that even nighttime cityscapes and scenic vistas are displayed with brilliant clarity.
