panasonic20150721da.jpgLUMIX DMC-GX8: Premium G Series camera for the enthusiast
Worthy successor to the DMC-GX7 offers new 20MP sensor and powerful Dual IS: four-axis in-body stabilisation and two-axis lens stabilisation

Panasonic has unveiled a stunning G Series camera for the enthusiast, with a rich feature set. The LUMIX DMC-GX8 features Dual IS (Image Stabilisation) for powerful handshake correction, a newly-designed 20-megapixel sensor to deliver class-leading image quality, Panasonic’s latest 4K functionality and a high magnification Live View Finder – all in a weatherproof design.

Doug Campbell, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic, said: “This camera is a compelling solution, with an amazing wealth of features. We’ve selected the very best for demanding photographers – from brand new technology and outstanding image quality to excellence in ergonomic design.

“Also, GX7 aficionados will be pleased to see we’ve taken their feedback and introduced a splash and dust proof body, a microphone input for professional video recording, and a free-angle design for the rear monitor.”

For the first time, Panasonic offers Dual I.S with powerful hand shake correction for both the DMC-GX8 body and G Series lenses. Four-axis in-body and two-axis lens stabilisation combine to achieve rock-steady shooting that’s never been seen before in this class of camera. Blur is suppressed in both wide angle shooting and at the tele end for shake-free handheld shots in low-light, slow shutter speed situations.

Ushering in the next generation of G Series image quality, the newly-designed 20-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor delivers new levels of detail, outstanding low-light performance and impressive dynamic range. The powerful sensor and engine bring 4K technology to the GX8, with Panasonic’s latest 4K video and 4K Photo capabilities capturing every moment in impressive clarity. Now you can achieve 4K burst shooting at up to 30 frames per second continuously for up to 30 minutes.
Photographers will find Panasonic’s LVF a joy to use, offering higher magnification than ever before – 0.77x (35mm camera equiv.). The OLED technology and 2,360K-dot viewfinder provide excellent clarity and sharpness when shooting. For greater versatility, a new free-angle design has been adopted for the 3-inch 1,040K-dot OLED rear monitor.

The DMC-GX8 has excellent ergonomics, with a control layout that provides complete command over the camera, including front and rear dials, dedicated exposure compensation dial, and eight programmable function buttons. The camera has a highly durable, rugged magnesium alloy design, with a full diecast frame and a sleek, sophisticated exterior with a convenient grip and finely machined dials.

The DMC-GX8 will be available in Australia in September from photographic specialists and consumer electronics retailers. Colours available are: Black, or two-tone Silver and Black.

Key Features

Dual I.S. (Image Stabilisation) – Innovative handshake correction system

Panasonic offers Dual I.S (Image Stabilisation) capabilityi with powerful hand shake correction for both the DMC-GX8 body and most of the growing range of G Series lensesii. With both body I.S and lens I.S working together to take maximum advantage of both stabilisers, blur is suppressed in both wide angle shooting and at the tele end, with a maximum correction angle of 3.5x (wide)/ 1.5x (tele)iii. This provides shake-free shots even at slow shutter speeds in low light situations. In video recording, 5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S.+ (Optical Image Stabiliser Plus)iv, corrects complex movement for stable images.

Technologies for outstanding picture quality

The combination of the 20-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine achieves clear image rendering with minimum noise in low-lit situations at max ISO25600, and natural, beautiful picture quality.

The sensor’s increased resolution offers a range of benefits to discerning photographers and will see the DMC-GX8 find a home in the kit of landscape and studio photographers, broadening the scope of its appeal. These types of users will value the ability to get larger, more detailed prints, and the increased flexibility in editing, such as cropping and levelling to improve shots.

4K video and 4K Photo capability comes to GX Series

The DMC-GX8 records stunningly smooth, high-resolution 4K video (3840 x 2160, 25p and 24p, 100Mbps) at four times the resolution of full-HD. The result is crystal-clear footage that captures the most intricate details.

4K Photo mode provides a natural still photography experience and allows the user to optimise settings such as shutter speed for sharp still images at 30 frames per second. Capturing high resolution still images at 3328x2496 (4:3) makes it possible to produce stunning prints at up to A3 size. EXIF data is also available in this mode.

There are three ways to take advantage of 4K Photo mode:

•    4K Pre-burst mode. In this mode the camera captures 30 frames per second before and after the shutter is released, a total of 60 shots. The DMC-GX8 is ready before you are to capture unrepeatable split-second moments such as lightning or your child’s first steps.

•    4K Burst mode. This operates like a traditional burst mode, but will capture 30 frames per second as long as the shutter is held down, for up to 29 minutes and 30 seconds. This is

great for predictable action sequences that last for more than a few secondsv – such as sports where you capture the player, the goal and the team reaction.

•    4K Burst start/stop. Press the shutter once to start burst shooting and press it again to stop. This is useful when you are going to be waiting for longer and don’t know exactly when the action is going to happen, for example wildlife shots when you are expecting a bird to return to its nest.

After capturing 4K footage, simply scroll through 30 frames per second via the ‘carousel’ on the touch screen. It’s quick and intuitive to select that perfect image. Now, no matter how fleeting the moment, you’ll never miss a shot.

Impressive OLED Live View Finder and touch monitor

Panasonic has completely overhauled the integrated 90-degree tiltable Live View Finder (LVF) and the rear monitor for enhanced visibility and versatility when composing shots. The LVF offers the highest magnification of any LUMIX G camera at approximately 0.77x (35mm camera equiv.), and also features 2,360K-dot resolution and 100% field of view. A new large eyecup makes it easier to use, and an eyepoint of approximately 21mm makes the LVF comfortable to use even when wearing glasses.

Using OLED enables the LVF to achieve a high speed response with minimum time lag of less than 0.01 sec while enhancing the resolution. It also boasts a 10,000:1 high contrast for superior colour reproduction. The Live View image can be displayed in monochrome through the LVF, enabling shooters to concentrate on contrast. The 3-inch 1,040K-dot free-angle touch monitor has a wide viewing angle and and rotates 180° to the side and tilts 250° up and down, with approximately 100% of field of view.

Ergonomic design and controls

The DMC-GX8 is designed for extended shooting in the field with a rugged design including a magnesium alloy full diecast front and rear frame; and a splash and dustproof construction with sealing on every joint, dial, and button.

The control button layout is highly intuitive. Major settings such as the aperture and shutter speed can be directly adjusted with both the front and rear dials for smooth manual shooting. There are eight physical and five on-screen programmable function buttons to give users quick access to their favourite controls. A new exposure compensation dial lets users select from -5EV to +5EV exposure compensation.

It is also possible to make a temporary shift of dial functions with the Dial Operation Switch, which lets users apply a second function to the front and rear dial.

Fast and accurate

The DMC-GX8 offers Panasonic’s very best AF performance. It integrates Contrast AF with DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology vi which shortens the time to acquire focus. As a result, it achieves high speed AF of approx. 0.07 secvii to capture fleeting photo opportunities. Burst shooting is available in 20MP full resolution, at 8fps (AFS) / 6fps (AFC) to capture fast moving subjects. The DMC-GX8 is capable of releasing the mechanical shutter at max.1/8000 sec and 1/16000 with electronic shutter, which provides impressive defocus when using a high-speed lens outdoors.

In the Low Light AF mode, the auto-focus works in -4EV lighting, which is as dark as a moonlit sky. The DMC-GX8 also offers Panasonic’s new autofocusing capability – Starlight AF – first introduced on the DMC-G7. This allows users to capture subjects like stars in the sky at night using Auto Focus. Shots like these have previously been very difficult for amateur shooters to achieve without the need for manual focus and a great deal of trial and error. Other useful AF features include 49-point focus detect, Custom Multi AF, Face/Eye Detection AF, Pinpoint AF and AF Tracking.

Other features

•    The camera integrates 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology to offer a more flexible shooting experience and instant image sharing with easy operation. Using the Panasonic Image App, remote shooting is available using a smartphone or tablet, and images and video can be quickly uploaded or emailed.

•    The popular Creative Control mode features a total of 22 filter options. The effect of each mode is adjustable, and they can also be applied in P/A/S/M mode.

•    The DMC-GX8 offers 2.5mm stereo microphone input so that it can be used for professional video recording.

•    RAW images can be developed in-camera

•    Optional accessories include: Eye Cup DMW-EC3, External Flash DMW-FL360L(GN36), DMW-FL580L(GN58)
