Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX7 Digital Camera

panasonic20120811ba.jpgExpand Your Creativity with the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX7 F1.4-F2.3 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX Lens for amazing creative possibilities

Panasonic has announced the latest model in its LX Series: the new LUMIX DMC-LX7 ‘creative compact’ camera, incorporating a newly developed F1.4 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX lens with outstanding brightness.

The lens features F1.4-F2.3 brightness with a 24-90mm versatile zoom range (35mm camera equivalent). This is around four times as bright as an F2.8 lens, and provides scope for the use of a higher shutter speed to capture stunningly sharp, blur-free images in low-light situations; and gives impressive expression to images with beautiful gradation and artistic defocus.

panasonic20120722bb.jpgThe DMC-LX7 - the fifth generation of the world-renowned LX Series - offers a range of technologies designed to satisfy the creative demands of the most exacting photographer. The lens, the image sensor and the image processing engine have been completely redesigned; and there are a host of creative features to capture that perfect shot.

Alistair Robins, Group Marketing Manager, LUMIX – Panasonic Australia said: “The new LX7 is the ultimate creative compact, and with the improvements we have made on this year’s model, we expect it to be popular with professionals and enthusiasts who understand the superb image quality it offers.”

The F1.4 lens ensures impressive images, even in low light situations. Panasonic’s Black Box Nano Surface Coating lens technology minimises the light reflection that causes ghosts and flare to help create stunning, true-to-life images with outstanding resolution and detail.

panasonic20120811bd.jpgThe POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabiliser) has been improved, and the newly developed 10.1-megapixel high sensitivity MOS Sensor expands dynamic range by increasing sensitivity and saturation. The Light Speed AF captures the most fleeting shooting opportunities.

The body of the DMC-LX7 has been redesigned with the discerning photographer in mind. The aperture ring allows direct, intuitive control of aperture, while the internal neutral density filter makes it possible to reduce light for a slower shutter speed. A new focus lever activates the variable AF area.

It also includes Panasonic’s ‘Level Gauge’ feature for precision framing. The large three-inch Intelligent LCD is redesigned for excellent visibility. The hot shoe allows attachment of advanced accessories such as an optional Live View Finder for high visibility when shooting in strong light.

panasonic20120811bf.jpgIn addition to full manual control, the DMC-LX7 offers a wide variety of shooting features such as 16 ‘Creative Control’ filters, Photo Style and Time Lapse.

The DMC-LX7 records 1920 x 1080 50p full-HD video in AVCHD Progressive / MP4[xi] with high quality stereo sound. The 3.8x optical zoom and manual control are also available in video recording.

Key Features

F1.4 super bright 24mm LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX lens

The DMC-LX7 is equipped with a newly developed 24mm ultra-wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX lens with a 3.8x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 24-90mm). This lens features outstanding F1.4 brightness at the wide-end and F2.3 at the tele-end.

The lens unit consists of 11 elements in 10 groups with 5 aspherical lenses with 9 aspherical surfaces, including the dual-sided aspherical surface ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens which has never before been incorporated in any LUMIX digital compact camera or interchangeable lens. The result is a high resolution image with minimal distortion or artifacts such as chromatic aberrations, ghosting and flaring. With the Nano Surface Coating technology, light reflection is dramatically minimised.

The 24mm ultra wide angle lens gives photographers a wider range of composition possibilities, and also minimises distortion, so users can achieve stunning, true-to-life images with outstanding resolution and detail.

The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabiliser) is integrated to suppress handshake vibration effectively, particularly when shooting using a slow shutter speed. In addition, the internal ND filter makes it possible to reduce the light to use a slower shutter speed with three steps.  An iris diaphragm allows fine adjustment of aperture.

Newly designed 1/1.7 inch 12.8 megapixel[xii] High Sensitivity MOS Sensor with wide dynamic range

The DMC-LX7 incorporates a new 1/1.7-inch 12.8-megapixel MOS Sensor with a 1.5dB improvement in the signal to noise (S/N) ratio compared with the DMC-LX5. This achieves high resolution images with stunning clarity, not only in high sensitivity recording but also at low ISO settings.

The high performance Venus Engine image processor has advanced signal processing. The noise reduction system reduces noise for the best possible picture, even in low-light conditions. This clever technology works to effectively suppress both high frequency noise in the darker areas of an image and low frequency noise in the lighter areas, resulting in dramatically clear images.

These technologies support the Light Speed AF and high speed consecutive shooting at 11fps in full resolution with a mechanical shutter and 5fps with continuous AF; as well as smooth Full HD 50p video.

Creative control and ease of use

Full manual control is available with the DMC-LX7 so advanced users can enjoy more creative photography; as well as Intelligent Auto (iA) for less experienced photographers.

The DMC-LX7 has a new aperture ring, internal ND filter, focus lever and rear dial. The ND filter allows the photographer to open the aperture for visible defocus in sunny outdoor conditions, or when using a slower shutter speed to capture the flow of water. The focus lever activates the variable AF area.  During MF operation, it changes to a handy one-shot AF to provide initial focusing. During playback, this function gives you one-touch zoom playback of subjects in focus.

The DMC-LX7 incorporates ‘Level Gauge’ which detects the horizontal/vertical angle of view while shooting and displays this on-screen, as well as sensing if the camera is tilted forwards or back. This is ideal for building and landscape shots.

Two filters have been added to ‘Creative Control’ on the DMC-LX7 to total 16 – Radial Defocus and Smooth Defocus; in addition to Soft Focus, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, One Point Color, Cross Process, Low Key, Toy Effect, Star Filter, Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic and Miniature Effect.[xiii]

The Radial Defocus adds a defocus effect radially from the light source while the Smooth Defocus makes defocus figuration even smoother. ‘Photo Style’ allows finer adjustment of contrast, sharpness, saturation and noise reduction for the Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery and Portrait presets. Custom mode offers manual control of colour effects in these settings.

With Time Lapse Shot, the photographer sets the start time, the interval and the number of pictures to shoot, and the camera automatically records images.

The P (Program AE) mode in the DMC-LX7 has two selections: Fully Open Aperture for background defocus, and Resolution Priority using the ND Filter for the best possible resolution.

While the DMC-LX7 has advanced functions that will satisfy experienced photographers, it offers intuitive shooting for the beginner with iA and iA Plus. iA Plus mode lets users adjust the defocusing area in the background, exposure compensation and white balance for more flexible control.

The DMC-LX7 is equipped with a 3.0-inch, 920,000-dot Intelligent LCD with super high resolution and a wide viewing angle.

Full HD Video Recording in AVCHD progressive format and MP4[xiv]

For exceptional image quality, the DMC-LX7 can record high-resolution Full HD 1920 x 1080 50p video in AVCHD Progressive (MPEG-4 /H.264) format, compatible with AV equipment such as HDTVs or Blu-ray Disc Players and Recorders. Alternatively, users can choose MP4 at 25p for high compatibility with PCs.

The 3.8x optical zoom with step zoom function and POWER O.I.S. are both available in video recording. High quality sound can be recorded with Dolby® Digital Stereo Creator. The stereo microphone has a zoom noise reduction system and the Auto Wind Cut function blocks out most of the noise from background wind. The iA and iA Plus modes are also available in video recording.

In addition, the DMC-LX7 also features a Creative Video mode, which lets the user set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive videos.

Rich options for expandability

The DMC-LX7 offers a wide variety of optional accessories to choose from to match every shooting situation and shooting style. The hot shoe on the top of the camera accepts the optional tilt-shift Live View Finder (DMW-LVF2) with approximately 0.7x[xv], 1,440,000-dot equivalent, 100% field of view.
