About Maxwell

The name 'Maxwell' first surfaced in Australian photo distribution in 1959, with the formation of Maxwell Photo Optics and the launch of the Nikon F camera. The company was a subsidiary initially of 16mm Australia Pty Limited and then Bell & Howell Australia. The name Maxwell came from the first General Manager of the company, Maxwell Adams, or Max as he is known to his friends.

In October 2006, Maxwell Optical Industries ceased, and two new companies were formed. First was Maxwell International Australia Pty Limited, distributor for Lowepro bags, Tamron lenses and other photo products. The second company resulted in the formation of Nikon Australia Pty Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nikon Corporation of Japan to take over all Nikon Imaging and Nikon Sports Optics distribution.

Maxwell International Australia is a wholly-owned subsidiary of DayMen Worldwide, in Toronto, Canada. Corporate operations headquarters are now now operated from Sebastopol, California, USA, location for the designs of Lowepro's award-winning camera, video and computer bags. DayMen is the owner of the Lowepro brand and trademarks throughout the world.
