National Gallery of Australia and art collector; Darren Sylvester,
Artist and Phil Virgo Director, Colour Factory.Proudly supported by Colour Factory, the winner has the opportunity of working with Colour Factory to produce a suite of type C exhibition prints for a solo exhibition in Gallery Two at CCP from 27 October–16 December 2006. Following the exhibition, the prints will be retained by the artist. The Colour Factory Award sets out to celebrate traditional photographic printing and arts. In awarding the Colour Factory Award to Roger Hanley, the judges commented, “We have been intrigued by this surreal and beautifully executed work. fables & reconstructions is a well-realised series using sound photographic techniques and in-camera effects across the ten images. Each constituent work explores the effects of long exposure and light with exciting and novel outcomes. The effects, which have been achieved manually and not digitally, have been skilfully employed to achieve genuinely curious images of landscape, architecture and occasional figures.” In the first five years of his exhibition practice, Roger Hanley is a Master of Fine Art candidate at the University of Newcastle, a freelance photographer, lecturer and Gallery Assistant at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery. Hanley has been exhibiting since 2003 in solo and group exhibitions, and has won a number of awards previously, including the Muswellbrook Photographic Award (2005). An integral part of CCP’s program is to provide opportunities for emerging photo-based artists through education, professional development and exhibition. As part of this commitment, CCP presents this national award for emerging photographers sponsored by Colour Factory. The Centre for Contemporary Photography occupies a unique place within Australian contemporary arts organisations; a place where emerging photo-based artists can gain formative experience in the development and staging of exhibitions; where practicing photographers can find new audiences; and established artists can experiment with new direction. |
