Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II Camera Review
canon20141023ca.jpgDigital Camera Review by: Michelle Grimer

The Canon PowerShot G1X MII is the perfect addition for the enthusiast or experience photographer looking to add a high performance, compact DSLR-like camera to their kit. With DSLR-like image and function quality this camera will appeal to people looking to add to something smaller and zippier to their existing camera assortment. Featuring a 12.8 megapixel capture, large ISO range and an F2 aperture, straight out of the box, the camera will tick almost every box buyers have in the $800-$1200 range.

Appearance and Functionality

The Canon PowerShot G1X MII is easy to use and packed with a host of cleverly customised functions and features that next-gen photographers are looking for. This includes the now standard smart device type functionality such as WIFI connectivity and touch-screen menu / function navigation and operation.
The G1X is well built, sits, feels and handles beautifully when put to work. Its Menu system is easy to navigate delivering an excellent mix of functionality and options, all laid out in a user-friendly quick find order. Buttons on the rear and top provide access to pretty much all of the camera's main functionality, with remaining functions locatable within a couple of taps.
A quick note, the camera doesn't have any internal memory so at the time of purchase make sure you include a quality memory card such as the 16GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I to handle the 12.8mp capture.

Image Quality / Lens Quality

The Canon G1X comes equipped with a 24mm-120mm 5x optical zoom, f2 IS lens. This newly developed 14 element in 11 groups (1 double-sided aspherical UA lens and 2 double-sided aspherical lenses) lens is fast and covers a wide focal range allowing the photographer to achieve high quality images in varying conditions. With the G1X, Canon has developed a high sensitivity format CMOS DIGIC 6 with iSAPS technology sensor combined with 12.8MP capture, which produces images edging near DSLR quality. The imagery produced by this camera delivers excellent primary colours whilst staying true to skin tones, contrast and sharpness. With the larger aperture beautiful shallow depth of field images can be created with this Intelligent IS with 5-axis Enhanced Dynamic IS lens, effortlessly.
The large image files captured provide the user a further opportunity to enhance those images should they wish to go down the path of retouching, or just want to enjoying viewing them on high resolution monitors such as those manufactured by EIZO.

The LCD screen is a tilting, sRGB PureColor II 3-inch Touchscreen LCD (TFT) with a 3:2 aspect ratio and approximately 1,040,000 dots.As the display is hinged it allows the user to get creative with composition and camera positioning without guessing if the subject is in the frame.
There is a 31-point, Face Detection or Touch AF with Object and Face Select along with Tracking making the process of captuing sharp images a breeze. The LCD screen performed fairly well in sunlight but struggled in the same areas that pretty much every digital device suffers in bright light. So luckily Canon provide the optional extra viewfinder which simply slots into the camera hot shoe.

Although the Canon PowerShot G1X MII primarily is a photographic camera, it does come equipped with Full HD 1080p video capture. Recording at 1920x1080 pixels the G1X MII enjoys the use of the camera's zoom functionality along with a selection of creative filters that can be applied whilst filming, to either enhance your production or simply help you out with distraction from your terrible filming skills!
The dual in-built microphone captures in stereo so on playback through a tv you'll be able to appreciate Canon's efforts to provide better sound qaulity.

Canon has produced yet another a fine PowerShot camera that boasts SLR-like power, yet is small enough and light enough to take on assignment or travel the globe. The PowerShot G1X MII is loaded with a bright f2 lens, hinged touch screen functionality to bring the photographer out in you, Full HD video capture and loads of manual and creative functionality firming this unit's worthiness of shoppers consideration in the $800 - $1200 bracket. Plenty of bang for buck on offer to satisfy beginners, enthusiasts and the next-gen buyer looking for a hint of smart phone technology in their camera.
