Epson New LCD Controller
Epson Releases New LCD Controller

Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") announced today that it has developed a new addition to its line of Mobile Graphics Engine LCD controllers. Known as the S1D13511, the latest LCD controller supports cameras up to the three-megapixel class, making it the ideal controller for next-generation camera-phones. Designed specifically for the camera-phone market, where the demand for megapixel cameras and improved rendering performance is growing, Epson's latest Mobile Graphics Engine lightens the load on a handset system's main CPU by providing a variety of hardware engines. S1D13511 samples, which are priced at ¥3,500 (excluding sales tax), will begin shipping this month.

Epson developed a Pixel Processor, a new graphics-processing engine, for the S1D13511. The Pixel Processor greatly facilitates the image processing of photo data in internal SDRAM, enabling smooth zooming/shrinking, filtering and JPEG processing. Epson also further boosted the performance of the 2-D graphics engine that was used on earlier models by adding sprites and Alpha blending, thus enhancing animation and game rendering performance while simultaneously lightening the burden placed on a system's main CPU.

The Mobile Graphics Engine series is a key product, and Epson will continue to support customers' requirements by further expanding this line of products for the feature-rich camera-phones of tomorrow.
