Epson Perfection 4990 Scanner
Sydney 12 January: EPSON Australia has released the EPSON Perfection 4990 Photo scanner with superior 4800dpi resolution and high 4.0 optical density ideal for the professional photographer or photo enthusiast.

With its high 4.0 optical density and 48 bit in/out pixel depth the Perfection 4990 Photo scanner can duplicate real shades of black and create a smooth and accurate colour and grey gradation.

The MatrixCCD and a revolutionary micro-lens make it possible to achieve an optical resolution of 4800dpi without increasing the carriage size.

High speed performance and enhanced productivity are achieved with USB 2.0 and IEEE1394 [FireWire(R)] for compatibility with both Microsoft and Macintosh PCs.

The Perfection 4990 Photo features a blue LED lamp which is visible from the exterior of the scanner, and moves along with the TPU while scanning so that the user can see the scanning progress.

The Perfection 4990 Photo scans up to A4 sized documents and photos and a selection of film sizes with a scanning area of 216 x 297mm.

It is easy to create and manage contact sheets with the Perfection 4990 Photo, as it can hold either 24 frames of 35mm stripfilm, eight x 35mm slides, three x medium format 120/220 (6x12cm) stripfilm, or two frames 4 x 5 inches and 10 x 8 inch films at one time for added productivity.

The Perfection 4990 Photo scanner increases the speed of negative scanning by using a blue toned lamp which reduces the extended exposure time normally needed for negatives. As the base colour of negative film material is brownish in colour, when scans of negatives are made with white light the transmission of the blue component is less than green and red. To preserve image quality other scanners use a longer exposure time for blue to compensate for its loss during negative film scanning, and this slows the overall scanning speed.

Old or damaged photos and negatives can be restored using EPSON Scan 2.6 software in Auto, Home or Professional mode for colour restoration and grain reduction and with Digital Ice(TM) technology for dust and scratch removal.

EPSON Creativity Suite replaces the EPSON Smart Panel software on the Perfection 4990 Photo, for easy organising and browsing with retouching and launcher functions.

Other software included to enhance images are SilverFast(R) SE6, Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) Elements 2.0 and ABBYY FineReader 5.0 Sprint Plus OCR software.

The EPSON Perfection 4990 Photo scanner retails for $899AUD including GST and is available through EPSON dealers.
