EPSON is tackling consumer perception of photo quality inkjet prints head on with public
exhibitions of gallery quality prints produced on a range of EPSON printers. EPSON Australia's Marketing Communications Director Mike Pleasants said research from focus groups continued to show that consumers are sceptical that inkjet printers can produce photos of the quality and longevity they expect. "The proof is in the print, so we want to get gallery quality prints in front of as many people as we can," Mr Pleasants said. In one of the first major sponsorships of its kind, EPSON is supporting a 2 year national gallery tour of images by award winning celebrity photographer Robin Sellick which opens at the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery on January 14. Robin Sellick gained major recognition in 1990 by becoming the first person to win both of the highest awards for portraiture in Australia in the same year, through the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. "EPSON presents Facing Robin Sellick" is an amazing collection of portraits featuring prominent actors, musicians, politicians, sports people and public figures photographed in Australia over the past ten years. Gallery quality large format photo prints - up to A0 in size - have been produced for the tour using EPSON scanners and inkjet printers, ink and paper. This national tour is the first major exhibition of Australian photography in this genre. It illustrates the way Australians see their icons and heroes, and the high standard of Australian portrait photography. "I wanted EPSON involved in this exhibition because we share the same philosophy about the bigger picture. Promoting excellence in photography and producing images of the best possible quality," said Robin Sellick. "EPSON is widely known throughout the photographic industry as having the best products in the market. They have a commitment to innovation and quality which sets their products apart. "I have always used EPSON printers to produce my portfolios as they deliver the best results and the prints speak for themselves." More than 62% of Australian professional photographers choose EPSON printers, inks, and papers when photo printing. EPSON technology can produce gallery quality images, matching paper and inks to provide a 'picture perfect' result on both home inkjet and large format printers. EPSON will also be showcasing images from renowned Australian photographers, printed by EPSON home and large format photo inkjet printers using genuine EPSON consumables, at EPSON Gallery at The Rocks in Sydney over two weeks from 11-28 February. "Both the "Facing Robin Sellick" national tour, and the EPSON Gallery Tour at The Rocks display the superb photo quality achieved on not only our large format printer range, but also with the home photo inkjet printer range," said Mr Pleasants. EPSON's support of Robin Sellick is an example of EPSON's ongoing commitment to the photographic industry with many years of product development in inkjet printers, scanners, ink and paper. Each portrait at the exhibition has been scanned from film using the EPSON Expression 10000XL A3 scanner, which is designed with a new moving carriage Transparency Unit for easy film and negative scanning. The Expression 10000XL is designed for the photographic industry with high speed, high quality scanning at up to 2400 dpi resolution. Each image was then printed by an EPSON Stylus Pro 4000, Stylus Pro 7600 or Stylus Pro 9600 large format printer, on EPSON Premium Semi-gloss photo paper using EPSON's revolutionary seven colour UltraChrome ink technology. Guests at the exhibition will see how using seven individual colours (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, Light Magenta, Light Black and either Matte Black or Photo Black**) increases the colour gamut, improves the grey balance and enhances Robin's signature use of vibrant colours and light. Robin's stunning larger than life size black and white portraits of celebrities such as You Am I, Danielle Spencer, Barry Humphries, Wendy Matthews, Jeannie Little, 'Molly' Meldrum and Kostya Tszyu will be on show throughout the national tour. Using the lower density Light Black ink the EPSON Stylus Pro range produce a wider array of tones to differentiate between the variations of light techniques used by Robin. "My portrait of Ian 'Molly' Meldrum is one of my favourites. I spoke to some of Ian's friends after they had seen the photograph and they said that the true 'Ian' is portrayed, not just the well known 'Molly'," said Robin. Portraits of actress Cate Blanchett, artist Reg Mombassa and Australian Prime Minister John Howard are also Robin's favourites. Portraits will be added throughout the tour and each show will be localised to include well known celebrities from that city or local area. Guests will also be invited to purchase genuine Robin Sellick portraits of their favourite Australian personality printed on the EPSON Stylus Pro range at the exhibition. These prints will be printed using EPSON UltraChrome ink which is water resistant and lightfast and when printed on EPSON Premium semi-gloss photo paper with increased weight and thickness will last at least 77 years*. |
