Photo Review New Printing Pocket Guide
Home printing has developed spectacularly since the publication of the last edition of the Printing Digital Photos Pocket Guide, which is reflected in this completely re-written new edition, available now at newsagents and specialist camera stores.

Printing Digital Photos is a handy, pocket-sized (A5) guide from respected digital photography writer Margaret Brown. The book has proven to be the one of the most popular in the 4-volume Photo Review Pocket Guide series, all of which are authored by Brown, a former Choice journalist and current technical editor of Photo Review magazine.

New longer-life inks and papers have been released by all the major printer manufacturers, and five- and six-colour printers which also double as scanners and colour copiers are available for under $500. Large format A3+ printers, previously the domain of professional photographers, are now viable for home use, with digital SLRs delivering image quality which inspire and justify home décor-sized enlargements.

Printing photos at home has never been easier or more affordable, but choosing the right printing “system” and then getting the most from your printer/software combination still requires some guidance, which Printing Digital Photos provides in abundance.

With 6x4-inch prints costing anything from 50 cents to $1 to print at home and A4 prints $2 to $4, home users will want to minimize their wastage of ink and paper – and time, and in this aspect alone Printing Digital Photos will pay its cover price, helping home printers to consistently get great results first time.

Of course, the printer is just one component for successful home printing, and Printing Digital Photos also looks at the range of popular imaging software available, and shows you how to use that software in combination with your PC and monitor to produce consistent colour and quality.

Key topics in Printing Digital Photos include selecting the best camera settings for printable images, setting up your “digital darkroom”, choosing and using the best digital printing software applications, scanning for hard copy, displaying and preserving your photos, direct printing options, black & white printing, and special effects and projects. Even for those who print at the photo shop, there are valuable instructions on how to prepare your image files for maximum quality from the lab or kiosk.

Previous editions have included a CD of photographic software. This software is now freely available via photoreview.com.au, which has enabled the publisher, Media Publishing, to reduce the cover price to $9.95 for this new edition.

Important as the technological dimension is, Photo Review's team believe that the tools are but a means to an end. And that end of course is the photographic image. Whether it be a happy snap at the beach, a meticulously crafted commercial image, or the transcendent vision of an artist, it is the image and the making of it that matters above all. And that's why every issue of Photo Review magazine features a profile and portfolio section for your viewing pleasure and - we hope - your photographic inspiration.
